An Elegant Autumn Wedding at Sophiendal Slotshotel

Sofia & Niclas

As the wedding season began to draw to a close, I received a lovely message from Sofia and Niclas just a few weeks before their day. Their celebration was set in Skanderborg — one of my favourite corners of Denmark — and I couldn’t have imagined a more beautiful setting to photograph in the heart of autumn.

Their venue, Sophiendal Slotshotel, is one of Denmark’s oldest and most historic buildings. Originally founded as a monastery by English monks sent by Danish kings to strengthen Christianity in Jutland, it carries an undeniable sense of presence. The moment you walk through its doors, you feel the weight of history, the quiet elegance of centuries past.

The morning began in one of the softly lit rooms where Sofia was getting ready. The autumn light poured through the windows, wrapping everything in a golden glow — a photographer’s dream. The air was filled with laughter and stories as her friends and family helped her prepare. Sofia, originally from Spain, wore a stunning traditional gown composed of three exquisite pieces — timeless, elegant, and deeply personal.

A short drive took us to a nearby church, where Niclas greeted guests as they arrived. There was such a calm energy in the air; everything about the day unfolded effortlessly. One of the most memorable moments for me was watching Niclas wait for Sofia at the altar, with sunlight streaming through a single window — gentle beams cutting across the church in a way that felt almost ethereal.

When Sofia walked down the aisle, the ceremony was live-streamed to loved ones in Spain, allowing their families and friends to share in the moment from afar. After the “yes,” we returned to Sophiendal Slot for portraits. Just a short walk around the grounds provided everything we needed — the texture of the old stone walls, the autumn colours, and the way Sofia and Niclas moved so naturally together made the session effortless.

As the evening unfolded into a relaxed dinner and celebration, I couldn’t help but notice how seamlessly the day brought together so many cultures, languages, and traditions. It was a day that felt both grand and intimate — a perfect reflection of Sofia and Niclas themselves.
