A Celebration Through the Ages
Michael & Matthew
Over seven centuries ago, Skinners’ Hall was built in the heart of London. Today, it stands as a magnificent Grade I listed building — a living testament to the city’s layered history. It was within these storied walls that Michael and Matthew celebrated their wedding, surrounded by an exquisite blend of heritage and modern refinement. From the moment you step inside, the building’s character envelops you — a seamless harmony of historic grandeur and contemporary elegance.
This was a day I had been eagerly anticipating for many reasons. Returning home is always a joy, but the thought of photographing a wedding in such an extraordinary setting filled me with inspiration. There’s something profoundly moving about working in a venue that has witnessed centuries of life and love. Though the Great Fire of 1666 devastated much of the building, the original cellar survived — its walls still bearing the faint traces of smoke, silent storytellers of a bygone era. Truly remarkable.
The morning unfolded with a quiet sense of calm. Matthew arrived first, followed shortly by Michael, as they both prepared in one of the beautiful upstairs rooms. Having met them the day before, I’d already envisioned where I wanted to capture their portraits — the balcony in particular offered a stunning vantage point for group shots and a breathtaking view of the evening reception as it came to life.
After the heartfelt “I do’s,” we took a gentle stroll through the nearby streets, pausing at one of the tube stations to capture family and friends against the rare stillness of the City on a weekend — that unique calm when London pauses to breathe. Returning to Skinners’ Hall, we continued with portraits, the building offering a timeless backdrop at every turn.
As dusk gave way to night, the atmosphere transformed into one of pure celebration. The grand hall was the perfect setting for dinner and a traditional Scottish ceilidh — a lively, joyful dance that filled the room with laughter and spirit. Surrounded by centuries-old paintings and historic treasures, it felt as though time itself had softened, allowing us a glimpse into another era.
The energy was infectious — laughter mingling with tears, the rhythm of the music echoing through the hall. As the festivities moved down into the ancient cellar for the late-night party, I packed away my camera, took a quiet moment to savour a Colombian hot chocolate, and indulged in a few Scottish treats. A perfect ending to a truly unforgettable day.
