A Sunlit Scottish Wedding at Glen Doll Lodge

Courtney & Taylor

Scotland truly has my heart. I visit around three times a year, so when Courtney and Taylor reached out and asked me to photograph their wedding, I couldn’t help but get excited.

Their wedding took place at Glen Doll Lodge, nestled in the Cairngorms National Park—a part of Scotland I don’t often explore. I usually find myself drawn to the Highlands on the west coast, so this was the perfect chance to discover another side of this beautiful country.

The lodge itself is a Grade C listed building dating back to the 1860s. Once a working farm, it now greets visitors with historic newspaper clippings proudly displayed at the entrance, instantly setting the scene and giving a glimpse into its past.

I arrived the day before and spent the evening with Courtney and Taylor’s closest family and friends, laughing over games and playing pool in the lodge’s games room. Their warmth and friendliness made me feel so welcome—almost as though I were part of the family.

On the wedding morning, spirits were high. Some guests set off on short hikes while others enjoyed the fresh air and scenery. And then—sunshine in Scotland! Who would have thought?

Before the ceremony, Courtney and Taylor shared a first look, and we ventured into the national park for their portrait session. It felt almost like an elopement—just the two of them in the vast, wild beauty of the landscape, as though they’d slipped away to be married in secret.

Their ceremony took place in the back garden, a simple and intimate setting surrounded by nature. When my work was done, I found it hard to leave. So, I didn’t. I put my cameras away, stayed for the rest of the evening, and enjoyed good music, great food, and—perhaps—a small glass of Scotch
